Appleby Isle of Man has appointed Garry Manley as the new head of its corporate practice.
Garry Manley, who holds a first-class law degree from Oxford University, joined Appleby as a partner in 2018 after spending almost a decade in the London, Hong Kong and New York offices of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, where he had a broad corporate practice covering M&A, debt/equity capital markets and financing transactions.
As a dual-qualified lawyer, he advises on a broad range of Isle of Man and British Virgin Islands corporate transactions and has led on many of the most high-profile Isle of Man corporate transactions in recent years, including advising Tesco on its recent acquisition of the island’s largest supermarket chain. As well as being a recognised corporate law expert, Garry is one of the Isle of Man’s leading regulatory lawyers, with a particular focus on insurance companies, banks and trust/corporate service providers.
Appleby Isle of Man Managing Partner Mark Holligon said: “I am delighted to announce Garry’s appointment as head of Appleby’s Isle of Man corporate practice. Garry is a very talented lawyer and has led on many of the Isle of Man’s most significant corporate transactions and regulatory matters in the past few years. With his vast experience, I have no doubt that he will lead the practice very successfully.
I would also like to put on record my sincere thanks to Kyle Sutherland for his significant contribution during his time as the head of the practice. He has been instrumental to the continued growth of the practice, which now consists of 18 lawyers, making it by some distance the Isle of Man’s largest corporate law practice.”
Commenting on his appointment, Garry said: “It is an enormous honour to take over from Kyle as the head of Appleby’s Isle of Man corporate team, having got my first experience of life as a lawyer when I did work experience with our predecessor firm 25 years ago. Our fantastic team of lawyers routinely handles the largest, most significant and most complex corporate deals and regulatory mandates in the Isle of Man, and we look forward to continuing to provide our clients with the world-class level of client service for which we are known.”
Kyle Sutherland, who is taking a career break and heading off travelling around the world with his family, said: “I feel incredibly privileged to have led Appleby’s Isle of Man corporate practice over the past few years. It has been a fantastic place to work and develop my career, and I am very proud of what we have achieved, and continue to achieve, as a team. I would like to congratulate Garry on his appointment, and I wish him and the team every success in the future.”
