KorumLegal Consultant: Norbin Rai Believes That NewLaw And ALSPs Are Driving Innovation In The Legal Sector.

January 29, 2025

January 29, 2025 by

This month our KorumLegal consultant is Norbin Rai, who is an experienced compliance professional with a proven track record of streamlining processes, mitigating risks, and enhancing client satisfaction. He is adept at navigating complex regulatory environments and possess strong investigative skills in order to research and resolve challenging cases. Norbin is a recognised expert in client onboarding, KYC, and advanced transaction monitoring, having developed robust policies and protocols to optimise critical compliance functions and prevent financial crimes.

1. Hi Norbin! Can you tell us a little about the work you are currently doing and have been doing?

I am currently providing expertise in financial crime advisories and working on assignments and projects to build robust procedures and protocols to combat financial crime. My work requires a strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and legal principles to ensure compliance with global standards and enhancing frameworks for sanctions compliance. I’ve been collaborating with a leading travel tech and software company to strengthen their compliance processes and effectively navigate complex regulatory landscapes.

2. What made you take the leap into working in NewLaw for ALSP’s? And why is it a good fit for you?

For me, the leap into NewLaw and ALSPs was an opportunity to work on diverse projects and learn from a variety of experiences. I’ve always been someone who loves to learn by doing, and this space allows me to work on different challenges while gaining new insights. What makes it a great fit for me is the chance to not only contribute my expertise but also grow by working on innovative solutions and collaborating with people from different backgrounds. It’s a constant learning experience, and that’s what I value the most.

3. What’s the most rewarding assignment you’ve ever had and why?

One of the most rewarding assignments I’ve ever had was leading a project to set up comprehensive procedures from scratch. It was a challenging experience, but it taught me so much about managing workflows, collaborating across teams, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Despite the hectic nature of the project, it was incredibly fulfilling to see the impact it had, and it was especially rewarding to have my efforts recognised and appreciated by my superiors.

4. As an experienced NewLaw/ ALSP consultant, where do you see NewLaw/ ALSPs fitting into the matrix of the legal sector and how have you seen it evolve?

Over the years, I’ve seen NewLaw and ALSPs evolve from being niche players to becoming essential partners for legal teams. Even in my previous roles, I’ve worked with people from different law firms who were brought in to help with specific projects or sectors. It’s amazing to see how this space has grown, offering flexibility and specialised expertise that traditional models often lack. I believe NewLaw and ALSPs are not just filling gaps but are also driving innovation in the legal sector, making them indispensable in today’s fast-evolving landscape.

5. What trends do you expect to see in the legal services industry in the next 5 years?

I think we’ll see NewLaw and ALSPs playing an even bigger role in the legal services industry, especially as everything continues to evolve. Legal services will always be in demand, and as technology advances, I expect to see more integration of AI and machine learning in areas like compliance, financial crime prevention, and contract management. In regions where legal operations are still emerging, I believe there’s huge potential for growth. ALSPs will become key players in providing tailored legal advice and solutions, particularly in specialised areas like financial crime prevention, which is something I’m passionate about.

6. Your favourite tune? And why?

My favourite tune, I would say, is “True” by Single Edit. It’s such a relaxing song, perfect for unwinding after a hectic week. It helps me reset and recharge.

KorumLegal is a boutique legal consultancy committed to providing value innovation in legal service delivery. The legal services industry is continuing to change with ‘NewLaw’ – and clients are seeking more innovative and cost-effective solutions without compromise on experience and quality
