The Daily Journal has named Crowell & Moring’s Kent B. Goss and Jon Gurka as Top Intellectual Property Lawyers in California in 2025. The annual list recognizes California lawyers who have made significant contributions to intellectual property law over the past year.
Goss, a first chair trial lawyer with more than 35 years of experience, handles intellectual property matters, technology litigation, and high-stakes complex litigation cases. One such case involved representing an aerospace company in a $600 million trade secret dispute. The litigation, which lasted seven years, involved avionics systems and presented numerous challenges, including managing over a terabyte of data and overcoming unfavorable documents. Goss and the Crowell team reduced the client’s liability from the initial $600 million claim to $16 million.
In another case, Goss was hired just before trial to defend an airplane engine manufacturer in trademark litigation. This case presented unique challenges as summary judgment on liability had already been granted against the client.
“The last few years have been marked by a series of high-pressure trials, including at least three jury trials in trademark and trade secret cases, along with several arbitrations,” Goss told the Daily Journal.
Gurka, a veteran patent litigator with more than three decades of experience, has a practice that spans patent, trademark, trade dress, copyright, trade secret, unfair competition, and breach of contract matters. He handles cases that involve complex technologies and regularly serves as lead counsel in multiple high-stakes matters.
He currently represents Shoulder Innovations in a patent infringement action against competitor Catalyst Orthoscience involving reverse shoulder arthroplasty implants and is leading Advanced Cluster Systems’ patent infringement actions against Intel and AMD concerning cluster computing products.
Last year, he successfully represented Callicity LLC in a trademark dispute, securing the surrender of a competitor’s trademark registration and transfer of their domain name and recently represented Lund Motion Products before the USPTO against a Chinese manufacturer and several distributors over automated retractable vehicle steps.
In his interview with the Daily Journal, Gurka said, “Virtually all the patent litigation cases that I handle involve numerous asserted patents involving complex patented technologies. I embrace the challenges posed by these large, complex cases.”
