27 February, 2018
The pending IP bills in Myanmar on copyright, trademarks, industrial designs, and patents were passed by the National Parliament (Amyotha Hluttaw) on 15 February 2018. This development signals the movement of the bills from the Myanmar National Parliament to the People’s Parliament (Pyithu Hluttaw), where the final discussions will be had and final revisions to the bills may be made.
This is the furthest stage to which the four IP bills have advanced in the legislative process since they were first announced to the public. After this point, pending any protracted discussions, we anticipate the bills to be approved and eventually endorsed by the President as laws. The precise timeline remains uncertain, but it appears that these laws will be passed imminently.
We will continue to monitor the progress of these bills and update you of further developments.
