(I) Statistics of Patent Application Filed
According to the statistics released by the TIPO, 17,674 patent applications were filed in the first quarter of 2018, an increase of 0.03% compared to the same period of last year wherein 11,420 were invention patent applications increased by 2% and positively grown for 5 consecutive quarters; the design patent applications (1,938 cases) also grew slightly by 5%, while the utility model patent applications (4,316 cases) decreased by 7%.
Breakdown by the type of applicants for the invention patent applications, there were 3,013 cases filed by enterprises, 355 cases filed by colleges and universities, and 126 cases filed by research institutions, a respective increase of 10%, 11% and 17%, in comparison with the same period of last year, all with double-digit growth.
As for the foreign entity, the top five foreign corporations filing invention patent application were Qualcomm Inc. (335 cases), Applied Materials, Inc. (116 cases), Tokyo Electron Ltd. (100 cases), Fujifilm Holdings Co. (79 cases), and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (76 cases). (Tony Hsieh, Patent Department)
(II) Statistics of Trademark Applications Filed
Compared to Q1 2017, the total number (20,210) of trademark applications in Q1 2018 increased 7%. By nationality of foreign applicants, Japan (1,177 applications, +34%) ranked first, followed by mainland China (1,155 applications, +24%), U.S.A. (1,045 applications, +30%), Korea (367 applications, +21%) and Hong Kong (320 applications, +8%).
