One Belt One Road
Proposed by China’s President Xi Jinping, the OBOR Initiative (the “Project”/ “Initiative”) is an attempt to develop the modern equivalent of the Silk Road. While the Silk Road was a network of trade routes that connected China to Asia and the Middle East, OBOR seeks to create more than a physical infrastructure. In addition to the extensive network, the Project will also create a global platform for cooperation in the fields of economics, policy, trade, and finance amongst others.
The OBOR Initiative comprises of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The former will result in three routes which will connect China to Europe, Africa and Asia, and the latter component will provide sea routes. The Project will involve building railways, roads, ports, pipelines, free zones and utility grids.
