15 September 2020
On 11 September 2020, the UK signed its first major free trade agreement as an independent nation after its exit from the EU with Japan.
The UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement largely replicates the EU’s trade agreement with Japan and secures tariff-free trade on 99% of exports to Japan and is estimated to increase trade with Japan by £15.2 billion. The deal includes arrangements, amongst others, on digital and data provisions, improved market access for UK financial services, new and more liberal Rules of Origin, expanding the list of geographical indications for UK goods and reduced tariffs on some goods coming from Japan for the UK car and rail manufacturing.
