Law360 has named Stephen J. McBrady, co-chair of the firm’s Government Contracts Group, an MVP of the Year for Government Contracts. The award recognizes attorneys “who have distinguished themselves from their peers over the past year through high-stakes litigation, record-breaking deals, and complex global matters.”
Law360 recognized McBrady for his roles in precedent-setting victories for government contractors, and for the state of Colorado recover $25 million from the federal government. Colorado appointed McBrady to serve as a special assistant attorney general to sue the federal government to recover money that was withheld in Affordable Care Act reinsurance funds owed to the estate of Colorado HealthOp, an insurer that filed for bankruptcy and was taken over by the state.
The publication also spotlighted McBrady’s focus on mentoring younger talent, and building teams with an emphasis on diversity—particularly in the landscape of the pandemic, although McBrady notes that has presented new opportunities for connecting with colleagues and clients alike.
“When I look down the pipeline at our young and emerging superstars, they are incredibly smart, incredibly talented, incredibly diverse and really nice people,” he said. “Where I’m spending a lot of my time these days is helping to mentor that next generation.”
McBrady, also a member of Crowell’s Finance and Strategic Growth Committees, leads the firm’s government-facing litigation practice and is one of the “go-to” litigators for disputes involving the U.S. government, commercial prime and subcontracts, and disputes with foreign governments. In 2020, he served as counsel in the $13 billion “risk corridors” litigation at the U.S. Supreme Court.
