STEP (The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) is a global professional body comprised of lawyers, accountants, trustees and other practitioners to help families plan for their futures. The conference aims to explore opportunities for private client practitioners and international financial centres amidst geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
Caljonah Smith, Senior Associate and part of Appleby’s Private Client & Trusts team in Bermuda, will moderate a cross-border tax case study session on 2 November with panellists representing overseas firms.
Her key areas of practice include advising on all areas of non-contentious trust matters ranging from advising individuals, corporate trustees and private trust companies, in addition to providing estate planning and estate administration advice. She also advises on general corporate matters, including corporate refinancing in cross jurisdictional transactions. Caljonah is listed as an ‘Associate to Watch’ in the Chambers Global High Net Worth Guide 2022 and by Legal 500 Caribbean as a ‘Rising Star’ in the Trusts/Private Client category. She is also a STEP Bermuda branch committee member.
Also attending the conference will be Vanessa Schrum, Partner and Group Head of Appleby’s Private Client and Trusts department in Bermuda, Hannah Tildesley, Partner and Head of the Trust Disputes team in the Dispute Resolution department in Bermuda, and Sam Riihiluoma, Counsel in the Dispute Resolution department in Bermuda.
Vanessa has extensive experience on a wide range of trust and estate planning matters, including the use of Bermuda private and commercial trust structures, PTCs, and the administration of complex and large estates. Hannah specialises in international commercial litigation with a particular focus on contentious trust disputes, banking and funds litigation, and director and shareholder disputes. Sam advises in a number of civil and commercial litigation areas, including liquidation and restructuring, regulatory matters, contractual disputes and professional liability claims.
