The ICC Asia Pacific Conference kicked off in Hong Kong today (26 June). This is a must-attend event for professionals wanting to keep pace with the latest arbitral institutional developments and the evolution of arbitration across the Asia Pacific. Attendees include practising lawyers; corporate counsel; arbitrators; mediators; business professionals and academics coming from or doing business in the Asia Pacific.
Our first day included keynote speeches and discussions from top Singapore legal practitioners:
- A discussion led by Michael Hwang SC, Sole Director, Michael Hwang Chambers LLC, Singapore, discussing the scope and limits of an arbitrator’s authority.
- Wei Lee Lim, Deputy Head, Banking and Financial Disputes; Partner, International Arbitration, Wong Partnership LLP, Singapore; Council Member, ICC Institute of World Business Law, training arbitrators in how they should manage the exchange of information.
Our second day (27 June) will include:
- Hazel Tang, Counsel, ICC International Court of Arbitration, Singapore, and Anna Kirk, Arbitrator / Barrister, Bankside Chambers, New Zealand / Singapore; Member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, as part of a panel taking part in a mock ICC Court Session conducted under the ICC rules. An interactive simulation (engaging the audience) will highlight an array of issues that frequently arise in the scrutiny process of APAC cases.
- Sam Boyling, Partner and joint Head of China Practice, Pinsent Masons Singapore , will be one of the panellists discussing Asia-Pacific’s desires and approaches to preventing and resolving disputes in the current energy transition.
- Chiann Bao, Independent Arbitrator, Arbitration Chambers,and VK Rajah SC, International Arbitrator, Duxton Hill Chambers, both Vice Presidents in ICC International Court of Arbitration Singapore, will be part of a panel reflecting on the evolution and key milestones and the ICC DRS Centenary Declaration, the blueprint for the next century. This panel will review the founding values of the ICC Court, consider how ICC will respond to businesses’ needs in an ever-changing world and add an Asian perspective that will shape the future spirits of dispute prevention and resolution. This will be chaired by Alexander G. Fessas, Secretary General, ICC International Court of Arbitration; Director, ICC Dispute Resolution Services, Paris.
