Dear valued clients, colleagues and friends,
The Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, organised by the International Law Students Association (ILSA), is unquestionably the largest and the most prestigious arena of competition for law students on the international plane. For the past 61 years, thousands of law students from over 700 law schools from 100 countries and jurisdictions prepare written and oral pleadings involving a hypothetical case brought before the International Court of Justice.
To commemorate their centennial celebrations in 2005, the Partners of Shearn Delamore & Co undertook their inaugural sponsorship of the 2005 Malaysian National Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Competition.
Fast forward to three years short of a score, Shearn Delamore & Co is both honoured and privileged to have been the sponsors of this prestigious Competition – named after the Honourable Phillip C. Jessup who had an illustrious career as a jurist, diplomat, academician and judge of the International Court – for 17 consecutive years.
The 2022 Malaysian National Rounds were hosted by University of Malaya as a virtual moot competition.
The 2022 Compromis presents the submission to the International Court of Justice by the Democratic Republic of Antara (“the Applicant”) and the Velan Kingdom of Ravaria (“the Respondent”) of their differences concerning the Suthan Referendum and it focuses on current and borderless issues such as human rights on the internet, data theft, the secession of part of a nation’s territory and foreign election interference.
The 2022 Malaysian National Rounds hosted teams from eight Malaysian law schools: Brickfields Asia College, International Islamic University Malaysia, Multimedia University, University of Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin and Universiti Teknologi MARA. This is the largest number
of teams in recent years and is indicative of the steady growth in the study of public international law amongst Malaysian law students.
The Partners of the Firm are pleased to announce that Team 290 from University of Malaya emerged as the National Champion winning the coveted Shearn Delamore & Co Challenge Trophy. University of Malaya also clinched the Best Memorial Award. The Runner-Up spot went to Team 375 from the Multimedia University. Mr Nevyn Vinosh from University of Malaya and Ms. Ishirah Amim from the International Islamic University Malaysia took home the Best
Oralist Award for the Championship Round and Best Oralist Award for the Preliminary Rounds, respectively.
In the upshot, the Champion and the Runner-Up teams will represent Malaysia in the Jessup 2022 International Rounds in August 2022.
Our Partner, Ms. Suganthi Singam, presided as a Judge in the Semi Final Round and the awards were given away virtually by our Partner, Mr. Indran Shanmuganathan, who had earlier delivered a congratulatory note on behalf of his Partners.
