The National Legal Aid & Defender Association recognized Crowell & Moring with its 2022 Beacon of Justice Award for the firm’s efforts to address systematic racial disparities last year. The award was presented at the NLADA Exemplar Awards Gala on June 9 in Washington, D.C.
“We know that it will take the collective power of our community to advance racial equity in America, and the private law firms serve as critical partners in our fight for access to justice and equity in the legal system. We are especially proud of all 18 of our honorees, who have each demonstrated an unwavering commitment to sustaining racial equity work during these changing times,” remarked NLADA president & CEO April Frazier Camara while announcing the award for the 18 firm honorees.
In the aftermath of the George Floyd murder during the summer of 2020, Crowell & Moring launched a Racial Justice Pro Bono Task Force and committed to provide $1 million in pro bono legal services to advance the cause of racial equity and justice. As part of this initiative, the firm dramatically increased its efforts in the areas of voting rights, police misconduct and criminal justice.
“The 2022 Beacon of Justice honorees have demonstrated excellence in service across the legal spectrum from civil rights and special relief motions related to COVID that have racial significance, to advocates raising their voices and committing resources, to untangling systems that are inherently unjust,” according to the NLADA.
