The National Legal Aid & Defender Association recognized Crowell & Moring with its 2023 Beacon of Justice Award, one of 21 firms singled out for efforts to address issues related to LGBTQ+ rights and gender-based equity issues that intersect with racial equity. The award was presented at the NLADA Exemplar Awards Gala on June 8 in Washington, D.C.
The 2023 Beacon of Justice honorees have demonstrated a commitment to intentional inclusivity and intersectionality with their LGBTQ+ rights, gender equity, and racial equity work, according to the NLADA.
Crowell has focused on several pro bono initiatives this past year focused at the intersection of LGBTQ+, gender and racial justice. Crowell launched a Reproductive Rights Pro Bono Task Force in 2022 to advance the cause of reproductive rights and resist erosion of rights hard-won for our LGBTQ+ citizens. Crowell also increased its pro bono immigration work at the intersection of LGBTQ+, gender and racial equity issues, hosting a first of its kind LGBTQ+ U Visa Clinic with the National Immigrant Justice Center in reaction to the record number of incidents of violence against transgender and gender-nonconforming people over the past year. Crowell’s New York Office has taken on half-a-dozen name-change matters through the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund over the past year and have provided their clients with invaluable identity-affirming pro bono representation.
“When the corporate community speaks, the world listens. When they act, the world responds. So, when they use their collective voices to advance racial equity, gender equity, and LGBTQ+ rights its impact is felt across the globe. We are proud to honor each of the 21 firms who have demonstrated excellence in the fight to ensure access to justice and equity within the legal system,” said April Frazier Camara, president and CEO of NLADA, announcing the award winners.
