Changes to Australian laws proposed on 25 October 2021 will have a significant effect on media, social media and online businesses who carry on business in Australia.
Immediate changes include an online privacy code for social media and platforms and certain others, together with penalties of up to potentially AU$10,000,000 or more for some companies. Further changes up for discussion include narrowing the media and journalism exemption, the introduction of a statutory tort of privacy, and increased regulation of adtech, which are likely to have significant impacts on the operation of media and entertainment businesses operating in Australia.
