23 December 2020
We hope you are well and are staying safe.
In a recent development relating to the labour codes, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, by way of a notification dated December 18, 2020, has notified and brought into immediate effect certain provisions of the Code on Wages, 2019 (Wage Code). The provisions which have been brought into effect pertain to constitution of the Central Advisory Board (Board) by the Central Government. The Board is empowered to advise on matters relating to fixation or revision of minimum wages, providing employment opportunities to women, etc. A copy of the notification is available here. This notification is essentially to enable the Central Government to form the requisite Board to put in place the required mechanism for easy transition from the extant enactments to the Wage Code. The sections of the Wage Code that have been notified do not contain any responsibilities or obligations for employers.
