Former Chairperson of the Competition Commission of India, Mr. Ashok Chawla, has been appointed as a member of the Strategic Advisory Board of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas with effect from 15th January, 2016.
Mr Chawla is a distinguished civil servant with over 40 years of experience in various sectors of the economy at the State Government and Union Government in India, as well as at International Multilateral Agencies.
Mr Chawla started his career in the state of Gujarat and held various administrative positions including being chief executive of important state owned enterprises. He has served as the Economic Counsellor in the Indian Embassy at Washington DC, USA in the late 1980s. During 1998-2011, he held several senior positions within the Union Government of India including being member of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA). He was the Permanent Secretary in key ministries of the Government of India to include Finance, Economic Affairs and Civil Aviation. Mr Chawla also served as a board member in Reserve Bank of India, the country’s central bank including being alternate Governor at the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, representing India. Apart from this, he also served in India’s leading public sector undertakings (PSU) as Chairman & Managing Director of Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited and Director of Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Limited.
Mr Chawla joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1973 and is a post graduate in economics, holding a Masters Degree from the Delhi School of Economics, 1972.

The Strategic Advisory Board of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas was formed on 9th August, 2015 with the following advisory members, Mr. N. R. Narayana Murthy, Co-Founder of Infosys, Mr. Deepak Parekh, Chairman of HDFC Ltd, Mr. Uday Kotak, Executive Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, Dr. Janmejaya Sinha, Chairman of Boston Consultancy Group (BCG) – Asia Pacific, Professor Umakanth Varottil, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law in National University Singapore and will now include Mr. Ashok Chawla, Former Chairperson, Competition Commission of India.
