— Your Team, Unicase
Team Evolution
This year, Unicase welcomed new prospective talents to our Almaty and Astana offices and celebrated the growth and achievements of the team onboard. Our HR department reviewed an impressive 883 applications for paralegal positions alone, inviting just 78 candidates to the next stage of interviews. From this selective process, only 11 exceptional individuals were invited to join the Team and start their probation period. We thank our partnering universities – KIMEP, Caspian University, KazGU, SDU, and De Montfort – for helping us find exceptional talents.
This year, we welcomed Mr. Yerken Mukash, formerly of Dentons Kazakhstan, to lead our Chinese business development. Born in China and rooted in Kazakhstan since 1991, Mr. Mukash brings vast experience with top law firms and serves as Special Advisor for China Affairs at the Kazakhstan Bar Association. Notably, he played a key role in signing the Memorandum of Understanding between KazBar and the Urumqi Lawyers Association.
The promotion of two talented team members:
- Zhanibek Dairov (joined 2022) is now a Senior Associate specialising in Corporate, Labour, and M&A.
- Symbat Akhatbek (joined 2021) has been promoted to Senior Associate, excelling in Banking, Finance, and Compliance.
Our juniors are also shining:
- Daniil Litosh earned a rare double promotion to Associate.

Major Projects of 2024
1. Uranium One Exits Joint Ventures with Kazatomprom
Unicase advised uranium mining deals worth over USD 570 million, reinforcing Kazakhstan’s position as a top global uranium supplier while deepening international partnerships. JV Zarechnoye JSC – The transaction involved transferring over 49% ownership to State Nuclear Uranium Resource Development Company Ltd., enabling Chinese investors to access 3,500 tonnes of uranium reserves. This deal enhances the operational efficiency of the Zarechnoye mine, ensuring compliance with Kazakhstan’s regulatory frameworks and extending its productive lifecycle. JV Kyzylkum LLP and JV Khorasan-U LLP – Unicase facilitated the transfer of a 30% stake to China Uranium Development Company Ltd., unlocking opportunities to increase production at the Horasan deposit, which produces 2,100 tonnes of uranium annually. With reserves of 33,000 tonnes, operations are set to continue through 2038, aligning with Kazakhstan’s strategic goals for sustained output and global market leadership.
2. Hydroelectric Power Project (46.6 MW, Uzbekistan)
Unicase advised Uzbekistan’s state-owned energy company on its first major hydroelectric project, part of the World Bank-funded “Institutional Capacity Building Project.” The Project includes five small- to medium-sized hydro facilities, producing 179 million kWh of clean energy annually to reduce Uzbekistan’s greenhouse gas emissions by 35% per unit of GDP by 2030, aligning with the country’s climate goals. Hydropower, a complex renewable energy source, complements Uzbekistan’s successful integration of wind and solar energy. Modifying water flow through dams or diversion structures offers clean energy, reduces carbon emissions, and contributes to environmental sustainability.
2. Large-Scale Wind Farm Development (1GW, Southern Kazakhstan Region)
Unicase advised on developing Kazakhstan’s first 1GW wind farm with an integrated 500 MW/1GWh battery storage system, playing a key role in regulatory compliance and operational readiness from initial documentation to commissioning. This project adds 1GW of wind energy, boosting Kazakhstan’s renewable share from 0.6% toward a 10% green energy generation goal by 2030. Replacing coal with wind energy will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support the country’s international climate commitments and address its status as a significant emitter in Central Asia. Aligned with Kazakhstan’s Concept for Transition to a Green Economy, which targets 50% renewable energy by 2050, the Project enhances the renewable energy market, attracts investment, and strengthens the nation’s green energy strategy.
3. Combined Cycle Power Plant and Wind Integration
Unicase advises one of China’s five largest state-owned power generation enterprises to develop a combined cycle power plant (CCPP) in West Kazakhstan region, built on a BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) basis with integrated wind power. In the Project’s early stages, Unicase structured the initiative, guiding investment agreements, public-private partnership schemes, EPC frameworks, and the assignment of rights from a quasi-state company. The team also advised on necessary amendments to electricity legislation and secondary rules, justifying the legislative changes essential for the project’s success.
4. Battery Storage Project (1GW, Southeast Kazakhstan):
Unicase advises on developing a 1GW wind and battery storage project in South Kazakhstan’s Region, a $1.5 billion greenfield initiative supporting the country’s renewable energy strategy. Unicase supports critical legal aspects, including structuring the power purchase agreement, securing permits and land agreements, and drafting key contracts such as the EPC and operation and maintenance agreements. The team also facilitates grid connection agreements and ensures compliance with local laws and regulations. This project is a cornerstone of Kazakhstan’s renewable energy goals, boosting clean energy capacity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and advancing the country’s target of 50% renewable energy by 2050.
5. Hybrid Renewable Energy Projects (1GW and 250 MW, A Northern Economic Zone of Kazakhstan Kazakhstan):
In collaboration with EBRD, Unicase advises the development of wind auctions and Battery Energy Storage Systems. This project will improve energy stability, grid reliability, and reduce carbon emissions, promoting sustainability and green economic growth. Legal support included drafting legislation, risk analysis, securing authorisations, and coordinating with state authorities.
