The World Bank has released Enabling the Business of Agriculture Report 2019, a report which presents indicators that assess legal and administrative frameworks affecting farmers in 101 countries, including the Philippines. SyCipLaw supported the World Bank research.
The report’s foreword notes, `[B]eyond the production of food for sustenance and nourishment, agriculture plays an additional role in reducing poverty as it provides incomes for many of the 80% of the world’s poor who live in rural areas. And sustainable agricultural development boosts growth in the manufacturing and services sector through a dynamic link between farmers to urban consumers…
Enabling the Business of Agriculture assesses whether governments make it easier for farmers to operate their businesses. The indicators provide a measure of progress and identify regulatory obstacles to market integration and entrepreneurship in agriculture. With globally comparable data on regulations covering agricultural inputs, plant health, access to credit and markets, the study finds large disparities across countries on the strength of regulations and the efficiency of their implementation.’
