22 March, 2017
The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) has announced two significant changes to the official fees for filing trade mark applications and for renewal of trade mark registrations. These changes will come into effect from 1 April 2017.
Reduction in trade mark application fees
To support and promote domestic innovation, the official filing fee will be reduced by 30% if the application is made by means of the electronic online system using IPOS’ pre-approved description of goods / services.
Increase in trade mark renewal fees
On the other hand, to discourage businesses from the hoarding of unused or dated trade marks, the official renewal fee will increase by 52%.
The new official fee is applicable if payment is made on or after 1 April 2017. Therefore, if possible, brand owners may wish to apply to renew registrations which are due on or before 31 September 2017 before the increase in the official fee comes into effect.
