In 2018, a total of 73,421 (down 1% from 2017) patent applications were filed with TIPO, of which, in terms of category, 47,429 applications (+3%) were for invention patents, 17,910 applications (-8%) were for utility model patents, and 8,082 applications (0%) were for design patents.
The average first office action pendency was less than 9 months for invention patent applications, a 10-year low. It shows that TIPO’s examination efficiency was significantly improved in 2018. Of the 2018 applications, 39,278 (-4%) were filed by domestic applicants and 34,143 (+4%) were filed by foreign applicants.
The top 5 foreign applicants by nationalities were: Japan (14,169); U.S.A. (7,345); China (3,506); South Korea (1,896) and Germany (1,511). (Lanya Chiu, Patent Department)
