On 24 July 2015, the Board of Directors of Thailand's Office of the Insurance Commission (the OIC) appointed Dr. Suthiphon Thaveechaiyagarn as its new secretary-general, replacing Pravej Ongartsittigul, whose term will finish at the end of October 2015. The Board of Directors will then propose the name of the new secretary-general to the Minister of Finance to submit to the Cabinet for approval.
Dr. Thaveechaiyagarn is currently a member of the State Audit Commission, a standing committee member of the ASEAN Law Association Thailand, and chairman of the subcommittee considering rectification of the Constitution. In 2011, he was appointed to head Thailand’s telecommunications regulatory regime as the Commissioner of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).
Prior to that he worked in judicial and regulatory offices, serving as a judge for over 10 years, as well as with the Secretariat of the Election Commission of Thailand. He has also held positions within the Ministry of Commerce, actively participating in WTO trade negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland.
After graduating with a BA in law (Honors) from Thammasat University, Suthiphon Thaveechayagarn was awarded an Anandhamahidol Fellowship (King's Scholarship) to pursue an LL.M. from Harvard University, and an LL.M. and a S.J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
