To enhance our youngsters’ understanding of the detrimental effects of dangerous drugs and the associated criminal offences, our partner Felix Ng and associate Joanne Lam took part as speakers in “Abide by the Law Legal Forum Series 2024: Project GATES”, which was jointly organised by the Law Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Police Force Kwai Tsing District, the Police Psychological Services Unit and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups.
The anti-drug sharing sessions took place in HKSYC&IA Chan Nam Chong Memorial College and Cotton Spinners Association Secondary School respectively, with a total of about 500 secondary school students participating.
During the highly interactive sessions, Felix and Joanne shared their first-hand experience in criminal cases, with particular emphasis on dangerous drugs offences, customary penalties, legal proceedings as well as the dire consequences of drug abuse. Another key focus of their sharing was the novel drug commonly known as “Space Oil”, with an analysis of its harmful effects and the latest legislative developments on its regulation.
Other speakers also shared the dire consequences of drug abuse from personal and other professional perspectives. A young individual, who has faced legal consequences due to drug abuse, shared his torturous personal journey of drug addiction, relapse, rehabilitation as well as the criminal investigations and proceedings that he endured. Dr. Kenix Kung, clinical psychologist, analysed the psychology behind youth drug addiction while social workers of Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups provided insight on how they assisted young addicts to reintegrate into society.
