The Daily Journal recognized Crowell & Moring’s victory in Mass v. The Regents of the University of California as one of the “Top Verdicts of 2024.”
A complete class action defense victory for the University of California (UC) and its top administrators, the case dealt with allegations that the university was obligated to pay the entire class retroactive pension benefits due to an alleged breach of fiduciary duty.
After six years of litigation and a several-week bench trial, Judge Evelio Grillo of Alameda County Superior Court granted judgment in favor of UC as to the entire class, finding no breach of duty and determining that California law would not support retroactive benefits even if a breach had occurred.
The Crowell team was led by partners Jennifer Romano and Kristin Madigan and included senior counsel J. Daniel Sharp, counsel Joachim Steinberg, and former associate Katie Lee.
