As part of a wider strategy to strengthen Malaysia's electricity generation from renewable energy sources, the Energy Commission of Malaysia (EC) intends to build large scale solar photovoltaic plants in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah/Labuan. The plants will be connected to the grid and will sell energy to Tenaga Nasional Berhad or Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd under the Solar Power Purchase Agreements.
The EC has announced the second competitive bidding process to select developers/developer consortia with previous experience in implementing power or related projects (including project financing and operation of power plants or electrical installation) to participate in the bidding process for the development of the large scale solar photovoltaic plants. The capacity of plants to be tendered will be from 1 to 30MW, with a target aggregate capacity of 360MW in Peninsular Malaysia and 100MW in Sabah/Labuan, which is expected to be commissioned in 2019 – 2020. Foreign participation is capped at 49% which is consistent with recent Government policy.
