Rory McAlpine, a recognized leader in the field of international dispute resolution, is a member of Skadden’s Asia Pacific Litigation and International Arbitration Group based in the firm’s Hong Kong office. Prior to joining the firm in 2011, Mr. McAlpine was, for more than 20 years, a partner and head of the advocacy unit at another international law firm.
Mr. McAlpine acts for financial institutions and corporates on complex and multijurisdictional disputes. He handles domestic and international court litigation, as well as alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and arbitration (LCIA, ICC, LMAA, UNCITRAL and ad hoc arbitrations).
Notable cases include advising (while at his previous firm): a major international bank on a shared appreciation mortgage group action; a multinational oil company on a $100 million ICC arbitration relating to alleged breaches of operating agreements in an offshore Nigerian oil block; and a Brazilian aircraft manufacturer in an LCIA arbitration relating to the default of an Indian passenger airline. Since joining Skadden, Mr. McAlpine has advised Roman Abramovich, defending multibillion-pound claims in the High Court over alleged interests in Sibneft and Rusal.
Mr. McAlpine consistently has been recognised as a leading figure in dispute resolution and is recommended as a leading individual in Chambers Global, Chambers UK and The Legal 500.
