Introduction
We are currently observing the 4th Phase of the Movement Control Order (MCO) as announced by the Prime Minister, extended until 12th May 2020. Prior to the enforcement of the MCO, many had taken advantage of the gap between the announcement and the implementation date of the MCO to return to their hometowns.
Therefore, in dealing with the anticipated mass movement of people back to their homes starting 1st May 2020, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) had jointly developed Gerak Malaysia, a COVID-10 contact tracing application. The application allows those who have been affected to apply for a travel-pass online or make an appointment to register at the nearest police station, undoubtedly a progressive move for all Malaysians.
With that in mind, BFM 89.9 – The Business Station talks to Partner Suaran Sidhu of LAW Partnership about Gerak Malaysia, the implementation of policies for such technology, factors for its success, and how Malaysia can move forward with the use of applications for administrative purposes.
