The Ministry of Civil Aviation has issued regulations, namely the Civil Aviation Requirement for Operations of Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, which will allow the limited use of drones for commercial purposes. The regulations will be effective from December 1, 2018.
This regulation categorizes drones into five categories:
- nano (less than or equal to 250 gms),
- micro (250 gms-2 kgs),
- small (2 kgs-25 kgs),
- medium (25 kgs-150 kgs), and
- large (greater than 150 kgs).
Except for nano drones operating below 50 feet, micro drones operating below 200 feet and those owned by the National Technical Research Organisation, Aviation Research Centre and central intelligence agencies, use of all drones will require necessary permits and licenses.
Air space has been categorized into three zones – red zone (prohibited), yellow zone (controlled use), and green zone (permitted).
Further, use of drones around airports, international border, strategic locations, vital and military installations is prohibited.
