25-year old Mike Uy dreams of becoming a professional golfer and of one day representing the Philippines in the Asian Tour.
Fueled by this dream, he wakes up early each day to clock in the hours to hone his skills and build the strength and endurance demanded by his chosen sport. Each week, he trains 3 to 4 times on the golf course, 4 to 5 times in the gym, and practices his golf swing in the driving range one to two times a week.
His hard work was rewarded with multiple wins in 2022, among them the Division 1 championship of Camp Aguinaldo Golf Course Interclub Tournament (with a score of -3), World Amateur Golf Championship Qualifier (-3), the Bong Pineda Cup (-3), and the 1st Eastern Police Cup (-2). More recently, he was the Class A champ (-2) of the UST Law Alumni Foundation Inc. Golf Tournament held in Wack Wack Golf and Country Club.
Perhaps the sweetest reward for his efforts thus far was being chosen for the national team training pool last November. The National Golf Association of the Philippines will choose from this pool the players who will compete in the next national tournament.
“The general manager of the Camp Aguinaldo Golf Course (CAGC) was the one who told me I got in the training pool,” said Mike. “I was excited and also relieved because I realized my training has paid off.”
Mike may be one step closer to his dream but he realizes how invaluable the support of his family and sponsors has been on his journey to become a professional golfer. He is particularly thankful to his father – his first swing coach when he began to play at the age of 8 – and for DivinaLaw who has been supporting his training since November 2021.
“DivinaLaw has been a huge help on my golf journey since golf is an expensive sport. In order for me to improve, I have to play and practice as much as I can. If I had not had DivinaLaw’s help, I wouldn’t be able to practice as much and would probably not be as good as I am today.”
Mike intends to keep his momentum from 2022 and to play in a lot of tournaments this year, including the upcoming Philippine Airlines Interclub that will be held in Cebu this February where he will represent CAGC.
“My plan for 2023 is to make a name for myself first as an amateur. Then for 2024, I’ll turn professional in the PGT (Philippine Golf Tour).”
Surely, great things are on the horizon for this rising Filipino golfer with a dream.
