Baker McKenzie took home six awards, including the coveted "International Firm of the Year" award, at the 14th annual China Law & Practice Awards held virtually on 15 October. The Firm was also named "International Firm of the Year" in Banking & Finance, Dispute Resolution, Labor & Employment and Real Estate categories.
In addition, the Firm was recognized for its work in China Yangtze Power Company’s USD 3.59 billion purchase of Sempra Energy’s Peruvian businesses, which was named "Outbound Deal of the Year." The deal is said to be one of the largest overseas acquisitions by a Chinese company in 2019.
Commenting on the Firm's win of the "International Firm of the Year" award, the China Law & Practice editorial team noted that, "Baker McKenzie has little competition in this category. The global firm again showed its all-around strength in finance, employment, real estate and dispute resolution. The judges were impressed by the quality of the matters and transactions it handled and its ability to apply multijurisdictional expertise in each case."
The editorial team went on to say that, "Baker McKenzie is one of the few law firms in Greater China that has the on-the-ground capability to advise on the full spectrum of financing transactions." It noted that Baker McKenzie "was able to deliver wins for its clients in different seats of arbitration" and "has settled difficult labor disputes for large multinationals and dealt with human resources matters of a multijurisdictional scale." The editorial team added that the Firm "has dealt with complicated real estate deals of huge value requiring high analytical skills."
Commenting on the awards, Steven Sieker, managing partner of the Firm's Hong Kong and Mainland China offices, said, "This year has been very challenging, and we have focused all of our efforts on supporting our clients and colleagues across China. It is humbling to be recognized for those efforts. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our friends at China Law & Practice for this recognition, and also our clients for entrusting us with their complex deals and matters."
