Herbert Smith Freehills’ Briana Young has been elected chair of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre’s Proceedings Committee.
Professional support consultant Briana is a prominent member of the international arbitration community with a longstanding record of involvement with HKIAC.
HKIAC is one of the world’s leading dispute resolution organisations. It has one of the largest caseloads in Asia Pacific, managing cases with HK$68.8 billion (US$8.8 billion) in dispute in 2020.
“This prestigious appointment attests to Briana’s expertise in international arbitration, and the esteem in which she is held by the arbitration community,” said Simon Chapman QC, Asia Head of Herbert Smith Freehills’ market-leading dispute resolution practice.
“It reflects many years of working in partnership with the HKIAC on, amongst other things, the development of their latest Rules, as well as having considerable experience acting as arbitrator and tribunal secretary in HKIAC cases.”
Briana was appointed vice chair of HKIAC in May 2020, having sat on its Council since 2016, and was part of the committee that drafted the HKIAC Administered Arbitration Rules 2013 and 2018.
She is currently co-chair of the Hong Kong Law Reform Commission sub-group looking at outcome-related fee structures in arbitration, along with Hong Kong partner Kathryn Sanger. This consultation recently closed and is expected to lead to wide-ranging legal reform.
“We are delighted to see HKIAC again recognise Briana’s talent and vision, and for her to continue her valuable work with the centre,” said Asia Managing Partner May Tai. “Her election reflects the firm’s continuing commitment to the development of the profession in Hong Kong and Asia.”
