Crowell & Moring hosted its 24thannual George Bailey Public Service Awards ceremony. Named after the hero of the classic movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” these awards recognize the firm’s lawyers and staff who have made a substantial impact on the lives of others.
“One way that we can matter to our community is through giving back to others through pro bono work and volunteer efforts,” said Susan M. Hoffman, the firm’s Public Service Partner, speaking to a standing room only audience. “When you represent a tenant in eviction proceedings and prevent him from becoming one of the homeless statistics, you matter. When you help a foster parent to adopt a neglected child giving him a safe and loving home, you matter. When you fight discrimination to bring equal justice to our society, you matter. Sometimes we forget how much it matters to someone to have an advocate, to have someone to listen.”
The recipients honored include:
- Partners: Toni Jackson (DC); Amanda Berman (DC)
- Counsel: Shira Liu (OC); Kate Watkins (DC)
- Associates: Jacob Canter (SF), Will Tucker (DC)
- International Attorneys: Amanda Kwagala (London); Wietse VanPoucke (Brussels)
- Rookie of Year: Emma Cunningham (OC))
- Practice Support: Eleni Athanasiou (DC); Ivan Carballude (NY)
- Staff: Beverly McDonnaugh (DC); Jon Rousseau (NY)
- Team Award: Kentucky Planned Parenthood Litigation Team. The team was led by Miranda Turner and Jennifer Romano, and included Marlee Santos, Gloria Martinez Trattles, Amy Pauli, Thomas Matthew, Felicia Isaac, Sania Sharma, Jamie Zeevi, Joachim Steinberg, Darshan Patel, Nandi Neil, Felicia Issac, Katie Lee, and Bradley Hutter.
“The toughest part of the George Bailey awards event is that we aren’t able to recognize each of you who have mattered through your participation in the public service efforts of the firm and to thank you for making a difference,” Hoffman said.
